Replacing Failing Amalgam Fillings with Ceramic Crowns
Patient History
This patient had several older amalgam fillings that were beginning to fail, with areas of decay and fractures developing in the remaining tooth structure. The patient was also concerned about the dark appearance of the silver restorations and wanted a healthier, more natural-looking result.
Treatment
The failing amalgam restorations and areas of decay were carefully removed. All-ceramic dental crowns were placed on the molars and one premolar (teeth #18–20) to restore and protect the compromised teeth, while a tooth-colored composite filling was placed on the remaining premolar (tooth #21).
The completed restorations provided renewed strength and function while replacing the dark amalgam with a more natural-looking appearance.
